Education: University of Northern Iowa — Master of Social Work, M.S.W., Trauma Informed Care; Wartburg College - Bachelor of Music Education, B.M.E.
My mission is to genuinely share myself with others so that we can reach higher levels of understanding and experience acceptance, commitment, and hope.
I believe we are doing the best we can with what we have in this moment, and that we can learn and develop new ways of responding. With a dialectical perspective, I help clients work toward their goals and create a life worth living.
I work with adolescents, adults, parents, and families navigating trauma, intense emotions, and recurring relationship difficulties. I offer a radically genuine relationship in which we can make sense of your experience, understand what is getting in the way, and discover possibilities for growth. Our work may involve addressing a specific concern, developing practical skills, or exploring emotional and relationship patterns that have been difficult to change.
My practice combines focused, evidence-based treatment with attention to attachment, development, and the experiences that shape how we relate to ourselves and others. Drawing from DBT, cognitive behavioral therapies, and focused trauma treatments, I structure our work around your needs, strengths, preferences, and goals. I also integrate dynamic and expressive approaches to help us understand and work through emotions, attachment, and identity. Where appropriate, body-focused interventions—including biofeedback, breath retraining, and somatic practices—help us explore and respond to the physical dimensions of emotional experience. Ongoing learning in neurobiology and attachment informs how I understand these connections.
Some of the most rewarding moments in my work are when clients refer to me as their family’s therapist. Depending on a family’s needs, our work may include individual therapy, joint sessions with a child and caregiver, parenting support, or sessions with the family together. We may practice communication and validation, develop shared family values and routines, and work to interrupt patterns carried across generations. I attend to each person’s development and relationships, with an emphasis on helping change take root in daily life.
My style is warm, direct, and collaborative. I bring curiosity, creativity, and humor to our work, and welcome your questions and feedback. I welcome people of all gender and sexual identities, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, and strive to offer a space where your experiences are respected and understood.
Experience
Previously a public school teacher, I attended the University of Northern Iowa to study trauma-informed clinical social work with a mission to prevent children and families from “falling through the cracks.” My experience includes in-home behavioral intervention in rural Iowa, residential and outpatient treatment, and clinical supervision.
I have served as a supervising clinician in a psychiatric medical institute for children and as the founding clinician of an adherent outpatient multifamily DBT program. My consultation and training work has included treatment programs, public schools, colleges, state and federal agencies, and law enforcement, addressing topics such as pediatric mental health, adolescent suicide, severe mental illness, school-based interventions, and DBT.
I am independently licensed in Minnesota and Iowa and am a co-owner of KPM Counseling & Consultation. Across therapy, consultation, and training, learning and development remain central to my work.
If you are considering therapy for yourself or your family, reach out with what has been difficult and what you hope could change.
Together, we will work towards your personal growth, healing, and the achievement of your therapeutic goals.
